What to Wear to a Newborn Family Shoot

One of the most common questions I get is what should we wear? And I get it—this matters. The way your family is dressed plays such a big role in the overall feeling of your images.
My newborn sessions take place in your home, in the spaces you already love. They’re relaxed, cozy, and centered around connection—so I want you to feel just as comfortable as it looks. Barefoot, snuggled up, nothing fussy.

A Quick Note on Style
Lifestyle newborn sessions are all about real moments. Think slow mornings, soft light, baby in your arms. There’s very little posing—just natural connection.
Because of that, what you wear should feel effortless and true to you, while still photographing beautifully.
Simple Styling Tips
Start with mom
Choose something you feel beautiful and comfortable in, then build everyone else around it. Soft, flowy dresses photograph so beautifully and move naturally as you cuddle, sit, and snuggle baby.
Keep colors light + soft
Neutrals and muted tones work best for my light and airy style—creams, soft pinks, beige, whites, sage, and gentle pastels. These tones keep the focus on your connection (and that sweet baby skin).
Coordinate, don’t match
Think complementary, not identical. A mix of tones and textures adds depth without feeling forced.
Keep it simple
Avoid bold patterns or bright colors. Subtle textures are lovely, but we want your images to feel timeless and calm.
Outfit Inspo
For mom
Flowy maxi dresses, soft knits, or anything with gentle movement. Sleeves, soft textures, and light layers all photograph beautifully.
FOr Dad
Keep it simple—neutral tees, henleys, or button-downs. Khakis or light denim work well. Comfort is key.
For Baby
Soft, neutral onesies, simple sleepers, or a cozy swaddle. Nothing stiff or fussy—baby should be comfy above all else.
for sibs
Keep them coordinated with the overall palette. Simple pieces, soft fabrics, and minimal patterns work best.
Final Touches
Before your session, lay everything out together so you can see how it all flows. This makes it easy to adjust if something feels off.
Have a backup option or two, just in case. And don’t forget the little details—steaming wrinkles, removing lint, etc.
At the end of the day, the goal is simple: soft, connected, and true to your family. Nothing overdone—just you, loving on your baby.
